Nov 4, 2008 Notes

1 Timothy 2:8 – Therefore I desire that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;

1 Timothy 2:9 – in like manner also,

1 Timothy 2:9 – in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,

1 Peter 3: 3 – Do not let your beauty be that outward adorning of arranging the hair, of wearing gold, or of putting on fine apparel;

1 Peter 3:4 – but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

“What Paul is emphasizing is that Christian women should adorn themselves with clothing, hairstyles and jewelry which in their culture are inexpensive not extravagant, modest not vain, and chaste not suggestive.”

                                                                            – John Stott

1 Timothy 2:10 – but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

1 Timothy 2: 9 & 10 – “And I want women to get in there with the men in humility before God, not primping before a mirror or chasing the latest fashions but doing something beautiful for God and become beautiful doing it.”

1 Timothy 2:11 – Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.

1 Timothy 2:12 – And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.

1 Corinthians 14: 34 – Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says,

1 Corinthians 14:35 – And if they want to learn something, let them ask their husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

“Where authority and submission are discussed in relationships in the New Testament, instructions are given for how those relationships may be regulated so that they function in Christian love and harmony and not with abuse. The Bible does not eliminate authority but cautions that authority should be exercised in a way that honors Christ. Those in authority (husbands, Elders, parents, employers) are instructed to use their authority in a godly way. And also, those who are to submit to these authorities (wives, church members, children, employees) are instructed to submit to authority in a godly way.”

Joel 2:28 – And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour my Spirit out on all flesh; Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions;

Joel 2:29 – And also on My manservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Acts 2:16 – But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

Acts 2:17 – And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; Your son and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.

Acts 2:18 – And on my menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy…

Acts 2:21 – And it shall come to pass that whosoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.

Acts 21:8 – On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

Acts 21:9 – Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

Romans 16:1 – I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea,

Romans 16:2 – that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also.

Philippians 4: 2 – I implore Euodia and Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.

Philippians 4:3 – And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of the fellow workers, whose names are written in the Book of Life.

Romans 16:7 – Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who were also in Christ before me.

Romans 16: 6 – Greet Mary, who labored much with us.

Romans 16:12 – Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord. Greet the beloved Persis, who labored much in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:11 – For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you.

Colossians 4:15 – Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nympas and the church that is in her house.

Philemon 3 – to the beloved Apphia, Archipuppus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house;

Acts 16: 13 – And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.

Acts 16:14 – Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.

Acts 16:15 – And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay,” And she constrained us.

Acts 16:40 – So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.

Acts 19: 26 – So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

1 Corinthians 11:5 – But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.

1 Timothy 2:13 – For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

1 Timothy 2:14 – And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

1 Timothy 2:15 – Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

1 Timothy 2:11-15 ends with a verse that no one has been able to interpret " women will be saved through childbearing." If part of the passage defies our exegesis, humility should deter us from being dogmatically literal about the rest.”

– Dr. Lee Haines

 “We must never forget what we owe to a woman. If Mary had not given birth to the Christ-child, there would have been no salvation for anybody. No greater honor has ever been given to a woman than in the calling of Mary to be the mother of the Savior of the world.”
